What is a Dedicated Circuit?

A dedicated circuit is simply an electrical circuit designed to make sure enough power is available for a single device without overloading the electrical system.

In the National Electrical Code book dedicated circuits are referred to as “individual branch circuits”

What happens if a dedicated circuit isn’t used?

If your local electrician fails to install a dedicated circuit when one is required it can cause significant damage to both your appliances and your electrical system.

Symptoms of needing a dedicated circuit include:

  • Tripping Electrical Breakers
  • Damaged Appliances
  • Burning Smells
  • Electrical Arching
  • Electrical Fires

Think of your dedicated circuit like a garden hose and the water like electricity. If you were to hook your garden hose up to a fire hydrant water still would flow through the hose but it would quickly burst and allow water to escape. When this happens with your electrical wiring this is a recipe for disaster.

What Appliances Need a Dedicated Circuit?

Most large appliances will require a dedicated circuit to safely operate. Below are common appliances that require a dedicated circuit.

Does a Refrigerator Need a Dedicated Circuit?

Modern refrigerators require a dedicated circuit to operate safely. Typically a 20-amp dedicated electrical circuit will be installed for your fridge.

Does a Dishwasher Need a Dedicated Circuit?

Dishwashers do require a dedicated circuit to operate safely. Typically a 15-amp dedicated electrical circuit will be installed for your dishwasher.

Does a Microwave need a Dedicated Circuit?

Microwaves often need to have a dedicated circuit installed but it isn’t always required. National electrical does however, does require dedicated circuits for all fixed equipment so appliances like built in ovens will now require it’s own circuit.

Does a Washing Machine Need a Dedicated Circuit?

Yes, your washing machine should have it’s own dedicated circuit. These circuits should be at least 20 amps.

What other electronic devices require a dedicated circuit?

While there many electronics that require a dedicated circuit those listed below are the most common our team of electricians run into.

  • Portable Heaters
  • Portable AC Units

  • Furnaces
